STYKMAN™ | Bring on the Toys

stykman concept drawingIn 2007 Symbiote Studios™ issued a Press Release telling the comic book and toy industries they had acquired the license produce collectibles based upon the comic book property The Miscellaneous Adventures of STYKMAN™.

As most fans of Independent comic book titles know this is something that sadly only happens on rare occassions. Most Independent Creators never get the chance to see thir characters realized in 3 dimensions.

Due to the popularity of the title – and the fact that it appeals to all-ages – Symbiote Studios jumped at the chance to be the first to pull the beloved bough off of the printed page and into three-dimensional glory.

The first to be produced was a collectible "Bobble-head" of the title character STYKMAN™ based upon artwork provided by series creator Jonnie Allan (Thus the reason for the oversized head on the concept drawing.) Due to the fact that STYKMAN does not necessarily have a head to "Bobble," Symbiote Studios decided to simply produce a collectible resin statue based on the initial concept drawing.

Capturing the hysterical visage of the wannabe hero sitting uopon his weapon of choice the Uranium Enriched R-34 SpinJibber, each collectible statue is cast in 100% PolyResin, stands approximately 6 inched tall, is hand painted and sits upon a hand numbered base – limited to just 500 pieces worldwide.

" I got my Stykman statue today and all I got to say is Nice! Very Nice!! I had a really terrible day at work and came home to find the UPS man had left it on my door step I guess and was outside all night till I got home. Anyway, when I saw it I became nine years old again. Symbiote really did a stellar job with it. It really made my morning." - Mike, MO

From Concept to Collectible

The total process fron the concept drawing to the completed piece was approximately 8 months. As with any collectible it all begins without a conceptual drawing known as a Turnaround.

The drawing is used as a reference tool for the sculptor. It presents a drawing from the fron, the side and from behind (Quite often a 3/4 view is used as opposed to the rear.).

From there the sculptr begins the process of capturing the likeness of the concept drawing in a thre-dimensional form using materials such as: clay, sculpey, etc.

After a ROUGH sculpt is produced, the first of many approvals are given by the license holder: Acuracy and general likeness, placement, shape and size, etc.

After approval of overall design is given, the sculptor adds detail to the sculpture as well as using various smoothing and refining techniques.

statue approval

Once final approval of the sculpt is given the completed sculpt is molded, cast and painted for a final round of approval before it is sent into production.

Once the first paint application it's time to once again go through the approval process before it moves on to the manufactuaring stage. As you can see by the images below, quite a few corrections needed to be made before the protype was signed-off on. Corrections and annotations were made on the photos with Photoshop in order to help with corrections.

Once the prototype meets all criteria and is signed off on the manufacturer can begin production.

side by side comparison

Now we turn our attention to one of the most integral pieces of the collectible... the BOX. Just as a comic book cover can inspire a person to buy, so too the same level of attention must be paid to the box that houses this one-of-a-kind collectible.

Because the color palette of The Miscellaneous Adventures of STYKMAN™ is the most commented on part of the comic, we felt it necessary for the first collectible based on our property to exhibit the same "Saturday Morning Cartoon" feel. The packaging had to be bold and dynamic to present the same whimsical, bouncy, and fun dynamic the comic coveys. Who better to design the packaging than series creator Jonnie Allan.

Without going into the details of packaging concept and design, simply put, the 3 dimensional packagige is design on a 2 dimensional surface that is printed and than folded to speciics.

stykman statue boxart

Once the art and layout is approved by the Licensor and the manufacturer a mock-up is made to ensure there are no priting errors, the dimensions are correct, snd any and all folds and seems mesch.

As you can see by a few of the photos above there were several glitches during the prinitng process leaving several small, white spots in the art – which is precisely the reason for this
mock-up.

With the files corrected and a final approval is given by both licensee and licensor, production can begin.
